Read this entire page first and then - Click on the Enigma Simulations to encode the messages - I want extra credit points - using both of the machines.  The quiz contains two questions.

Ultra and Enigma

The keyboard used in Enigma is a WWII German Keyboard.  Letters are not in the same place and it does not have a space bar.

The links below take you to two simulations.  You need the latest update of JAVA for this to work.

M3 Navy Three Wheel Enigma
(five letter Groups)
Set the machine to the following settings:

Enigma Type:  M3 Navy/Army/Airforce

Umkehrwalze:  B

Walzenlage: I V III

Ringstellung: A C C

Grundstellung:  D C A

Steckerbrett:  az by cx dw  (Type letter z under the A, Letter Y under the B etc.  This will put letters in eight boxes, All other boxes will be blank)

Group Letters in Blocks of FIVE

M4 Enigma (four letter groups)

The M4 Simulation has a reset bar marked new session.  The default wheels for the M4 machine are A A A A.

Encode the following message (once on the three wheel machine and once on the four wheel M4 machine):

I want extra credit points

Post the encoded message into the exam - objective questions. Be sure to copy it exactly as presented by each simulation. Finish coding the messages before you click begin exam. Note that enigma does not have a space bar, caps, or punctuation. The message will be displayed in groups 4/5 letters in a set. You can paste in the answers from the simulation direct to the exam question or you can copy down the coded message and then enter it into the exam. It must be copied exactly as shown.  The exam is multiple entry, so if you get it wrong, do it again.
